Nearly a decade prior to her big-screen debut, Wonder Woman had a different eponymous movie that was direct-to-DVD. Worth revisiting the film, especially because nowadays the lines between movies/TV/video are becoming almost nonexistent.
Wonder Woman was the fourth film of the “DC Universe Animated Original Movies”, not to be confused with the “DC Animated Movie Universe” or the movies in the “DC Animated Universe”. If your head’s hurting now, don’t worry – we’re just gonna focus on this one movie right now.
It’s darkly beautiful. Almost reminded me of anime. It shows how the Amazon women, after surviving a horrific attempt at conquest by man, get treated to their own land Themyscira, where rules forbid any interaction with the outside world, especially men. Complications arise when Steve Trevor, who any Wonder Woman fan knows is Lois Lane to her Superman, inadvertently flies his ship into Themyscira and meets Diana. Steve’s help becomes important, though, as Ares, the man who had been enslaving the Amazonians in the past, gets free from his prison with the help of lovestruck Persephone and he must be stopped.
Riveting film, with a lot of deaths, some even by beheading. Definitely not for anyone looking for a popcorn flick – this is only for serious comic book fans. I qualify though, and I love this Wonder Woman.
Bottom Line: Yeah!!!
Up Next: The live-action version of the origin story.
