I’ve already done a video review of this film and I’ll direct you to that.
I don’t have much to add, except that I rewatched the film before it left HBO Max, since my best friend hadn’t seen it yet. ALL of my opinions on the film, both good and bad, were reinforced. The key ones:
- The film took FOREVER to get started with the story.
- The story was confusing and I had questions throughout.
- The Diana/Steve story is heartbreaking and beautifully done.
- Cheetah’s story is amazing!
I definitely liked the original more, but Keith liked this movie more than I did and thought it was about as good as the first one. I was surprised, although his biggest rationale was that the villains here were both much more memorable than Ares. I had to agree, given I literally didn’t even remember whether Ares was a he or a she, LOL. Now that I’ve seen it, I can say the Ares in 2009’s Wonder Woman was awesome, but 2017’s not so much.
Although I wasn’t crazy about Maxwell Lord here, he was a good enough villain and Pedro Pascal’s performance really helped. Barbara is awesome though!
I love villains who originally are simply tired of being stepped on in life and then, once they acquire power, become drunk with it. I made the comparison to Jamie Foxx’s character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, before adding, “Too bad that was an idiotic character and an idiotic movie.”
I later saw from Honest Trailers that nerds like that are a common trope.
That same “trailer” skewered this film brilliantly. Nonetheless, I’ll give Wonder Woman 1984 a mild recommendation.
Bottom Line: Long and meandering but good.
