I’ll first refer you to my video review:
I only need to add this fun bit of trivia: the original Academy Awards were just a fancy dinner party in a hotel. They became the largest event in the ENTIRE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY for one reason – William Randolph Hearst wanted it that way. Knowing that there was an award for film acting, and having a lover who was an actress, Hearst had the thought process, “I’m going to make this award prestigious beyond belief. It will be incredible when Marion wins one!” With the same gusto he had used to create the Spanish-American War, Heart promoted the heck out of the Oscars.
He succeeded in making them wildly heralded honors – but even his pull could never get Marion Davies a nomination.
However, Amanda Seyfried now has one for playing Marion Davies in Mank!
Ha! Plus I love when unlikely candidates wind up with nominations. Who anticipated one of the Mean Girls would get to add the designation “Academy Award Nominee” to her name? Heck if they make a Ted 3 the trailer can advertise “Academy Award Nominee Amanda Seyfried” AND “Academy Award Nominee Mark Wahlberg”!
Bottom Line: Great story creatively told!
Up Next: Welles’ perspective.
