I’ve made no secret in these posts as far as my disdain for Batman v. Suprman: Dawn of Justice.  Suicide Squad wasn’t much better. In fact, after the release of Wonder Woman, which I love, I asked “How the heck did D.C. go from a wildly uneven mess, one of the most bloated nonsensical convoluted attempts at an epic ever, and a feature-length bad joke to this?!” and “Couldn’t the beginning and ending sequences have been eliminated? We could have then pretended that those other three movies never happened and that this was the start of the D.C. Cinematic Universe.”

While Suicide Squad was the “feature-length bad joke”, I LOVED Margot Robbie in it. I certainly wasn’t alone. The film turned Harley Quinn from the scene-stealer on Batman: The Animated Series to one of DC’s most popular characters and turned Robbie herself from the hot girl in The Wolf of Wall Street to a bona-fide A-list star! Now in this movie they both get the spotlight.

It’s a fun film! Again, you just cannot take your eyes off of Robbie, as she completely loses herself in this dynamic character. She gets great support from the likes of Ewan McGregor as the oily villain. The formation of the titular Birds of Prey is entertaining without beating you too much over the head with the notion of girl power. The story is told non-linearly, but consistently keeps you engaged with Harley’s quirky, funny telling of it. The fight scenes are well-choreographed and the film overall has a terrific colorful vibe.

The film more or less recouped its money at the worldwide box office but was considered a disappointment nonetheless, given how profitable comic book movies normally are. On the bright side, due to stay-at-home orders and consequent theater closures, Birds of Prey became available for streaming while still fresh in people’s minds.

Admittedly, not for rent yet, but if bored people want to buy it I’d recommend it. Hopefully this helps the movie get Warner Bros. a nice profit. If not, Ms. Robbie does get another chance at Harley Quinn in next year’s The Suicide Squad. I have faith it will be better than the 2016 film, as the breakout character gets foregrounded!

Bottom line: A fun, energetic movie.

Up Next: The origins of the character.
