Just imagine the pitch for this film: You take all the original Avengers, plus the new ones added by Infinity War, plus the other four guys who partook in the epic battle in Civil War, plus the new mystical doctor and that ragtag bunch of space travelers and PUT THEM ALL IN THE SAME MOVIE.
This is the epitome of high-concept but, as I’ve alluded to before, execution is even more important than idea. This has such a powerful, gripping plot – Thanos has to be kept from acquiring all six Infinity stones or half the life in the universe will vanish – told with brilliant performances by world class actors, sharp and complex dialogue, amazing sets and choreography, and outstanding visual effects. I thought the 85% approval rating, although quite strong, was surprisingly low. How could 15% of critics not like this?
Many people did though, to say the least. It may have cost around around $400 million but it made over 2 BILLION!
Game: Wow. Okay. Three Oscar winners (Gwyneth Paltrow, Benicio Del Toro, William Hurt), EIGHT nominees (Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Bradley Cooper, Josh Brolin, briefly Samuel L. Jackson, Kenneth Branagh in a cameo)
Up next: Something much more lighthearted.
Bottom line: One of the best epics in cinema history.
