What I said about the first Guardians of the Galaxy also applies here pretty much but instead of having a plot that ties into the overall MCU story about to come to a head in Avengers: Endgame, this film really focuses on the lead Guardian himself.

Well, Rocket considers himself the captain, but Star-Lord always gets first billing so I meant him, not to sound bigoted against raccoons LOL. Specifically, we learn much more about Peter’s history and his family’s history, and his surrogate father Yondu gets foregrounded while his biological father Ego gets introduced. Very emotional events and revelations follow, with Chris Pratt anchoring the film by showing surprising depth.

The movie was very well received overall and deservedly so. We’re talking 84% approval rate and $864 million at the box office (more than quadruple its budget).

Game: No Oscar winners but two nominees (Bradley Cooper, Sylvester Stallone)

Up next: A new hero’s first solo movie…kind of.

Bottom line: As fun(ny) as the first film, with a moving emotional story to boot.
