The first Avengers movie was a smash, to say the least! This one didn’t rise to the same heights but a 75% Tomatometer rating is still great and although it cost nearly a half-billion (at least before rebates and incentives) it had a gross nearly triple that!

Bigger question: did I like it? Very much.

The film starts off with a really fun sequence featuring the gang hanging out and partying in their headquarters, including a particularly inspired bit where everyone else tries to lift Thor’s hammer Mjolnir. Then things get dark as Tony, who wants to create world peace now that he’s a man looking to settle down, creates an all-powerful machine that unfortunately goes Skynet on everyone’s ass, LOL. It’s up to The Avengers (with the help of some new comrades) to save the day.

In a movie where the main purpose is excitement, there’s a bit too much emphasis on arguing and a plot a bit too complicated to be as fun as the first one. Also, the budding romance between Hulk and Black Widow is out of left field and awkward, especially given the great sexual chemistry she was building with Captain America in their last outing.

The actions sequences are still amazingly put together though and the twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (briefly introduced in a stinger at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier) are wonderful additions to the MCU. Most of all, it’s just such a joy seeing all these memorable characters together again and you’d have to REALLY drop the ball for the movie NOT to provide a great time. Marvel definitely didn’t drop the ball!

Game: No Oscar winners but SIX nominees (Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Samuel L. Jackson, briefly Josh Brolin)

Up next: A much more lighthearted time!

Bottom line: Only looks bad in comparison to the others. Wonderful popcorn flick.
