Now we reach a movie whose characters I’d never even heard of prior to their movie. Part of that might be because the more removed a story is from our reality, the less likely I am to get intrigued by it. I tend to prefer tales grounded in reality but with a supernatural twist to ones set in outer space involving different alien species.

I wholeheartedly recommend Guardians of the Galaxy though. The plot, as heavy into the sci-fi realm as it goes, is essential for any Marvel fan, as it is one of only two movies (Thor: Dark World being the other) prior to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame that centers around one of the Infinity Stones essential to the plot of those two later epics.

That’s only one reason though. More important is the humor. The battle over the stone in question entertains you to no end largely because of how much you laugh along the way at Quill’s macho haplessness (bet you didn’t realize that was a thing!), Rocket’s sarcasm, Groot’s strangeness, and Drax’s stupidity (mixed in with occasional deep thinking – he reminds me of Cookie Monster). All of the MCU movies (except for The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War) incorporate wit to some degree but Guardians of the Galaxy set the bar.

Very important and fun movie, even if other MCU characters are more your style. Its 91% Tomatometer rating is one of the best in the whole MCU and its $773 million at the box office was more than triple its budget!

Game: One Oscar winner (Benicio Del Toro), FIVE nominees (Bradley Cooper, Djimon Honusou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, briefly Josh Brolin)

Up next: Another congregation of the heroes!

Bottom line: Have a blast.
