This movie I had certainly heard of and was excited to find on HBO Max. Too bad it sucked.
I’ve referred to Cary Grant as “obnoxiously suave”. I think he and Clark Gable could both entertain in the right role, but too often every word out of their mouth says, “I know I’m so smooth.” It gets really annoying for me, and William Powell is like a poor-man’s version of those guys – a guy constantly gloating about his charm despite having none.
Well that’s the era of film they rose in I guess. This movie does have the makings of an interesting plot – a rich inventor guy is targeted by people who want his intellectual property and his daughter and future son-in-law are concerned about his well-being – but I didn’t come close to finishing.
Bottom Line: The smugness kills you.
Up Next: Getting more serious.
