Even the legend in his own time Christopher Nolan was once a twenty-something whom nobody had ever heard of and who was trying to make movies on a microscopic budget. For this series of posts, going through his entire oeuvre, I watched his debut film for the first time.
Although the Literature major didn’t make movies in college and did have a few shorts to his name prior to this, Following still has very much the feel of a student film. The cast is minimal, the cinematography is in black and white, and the plot does not require any sort of special effects or fancy editing.
How Nolan probably came up with the budget.
It is an intriguing and fairly complex plot, though. The movie makes uses of one tool that costs no money (at least when you write it yourself like talented multi-hyphenate Nolan did) – a riveting story. Our oddball protagonist has a creepy hobby of following people around, and one guy to whom he does that gets him to join in a life of minor crime.
Well, at least it seems minor, but to say any more would give too much away.
There isn’t that much story, given the movie is barely an hour long, but what’s there is great and you should totally check it out! Far worse ways to spend such a short amount of time.
Bottom Line: Small glimpse into the budding talent of a filmmaking genius!
